Reseaech
I am trained as a scholar of religion. My research focuses on intellectual, social, and material histories. I am particularly interested in fresh theoretical approaches to Islamic subjectivity and sociality (adab); Persian and Arabic literary cultures; and affects, emotions, and embodiment in Islam.
I completed my Ph.D. in Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, my dissertation was titled Pious Praise Poetry: Emotions, Piety, and the Making of the Medieval Islamic Subject.
I have a master’s degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies (my concentration was Arabic literary history) from the Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations department, and another one in Religious Studies, both from Penn. I received my undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Near Eastern Intellectual History from the CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies.
